"Our Vote Is Our Voice": Opinionated MAMA's Perspective on the 19th Amendment

Thumbnail
Our vote is our voice.  So, if you ever think to yourself on voting day that finishing the laundry or staying late at work is more significant to your life than taking time out to visit the polls, well, think again.MAMAs have something to celebrate this summer.  August 18th marks the 90thanniversary of the ratification of the 19. This is a Multi-Party Community. What we all have in common, is that...We Are All Women

Now that the community is growing so quickly, I just wanted to remind everyone, that this is a community where all political views and opinions are welcome. The same is true for the main blog.

I think we are all women first - before we are our political positions. And that's why I love the idea of a political community that invites all women to share in all different political points of view. We may often disagree (and that's ok), but in the end, we all respect each other as women - at least that's what I hope.

BE A GUEST BLOGGER

Hello Everyone.

Anytime a member of this community puts a post on their personal page...that post will be automatically featured on this front page, and will be strongly considered as a guest post on The Political Voices of Women.

Is Having a Baby Bad for Your Health?

Most American women might presume that the dangers of maternal mortality are a concern and problem only in developing nations. They’re wrong. A March 2010 report put out by Amnesty International entitled, Deadly Delivery: The Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA, highlights eye-opening findings. The data is based on research carried out during 2008 and 2009. The organization has framed their conclusions as a call to action for women’s human rights in… Continue

Click: When We Knew We Were Feminists

A number of years ago, I had a part-time gig at

an elementary school where I taught afterschool classes in art and film classics. One warm June day, it was decided that the

kids could spend thirty minutes in the playground. As I watched a scene that was…

A Quota for Female Executives

A full 40% of board members at major Norwegian companies are women—they have to be, by law. In 2002, the Norwegian parliament gave companies six years to comply with the new mandate. Spain has introduced a quota requiring that women comprise 40% of boards by 2015. Italy, France, and Belgium are considering similar bills

Lawrence Taylor, The Media, and Human Trafficking

When the story broke, the tabloid headlines screamed that Hall of Fame football star, Lawrence Taylor, had been arrested on Thursday, May 6th, for having sex with a 16-year-old-prostitute. One publication referred to her as a “teen hooker.”…

"The Russians are Coming"

Here in Arkansas red reflects not only fealty to the Razorbacks but the color of many residents', both native and transplanted, conservative politics and unflinching-to-the-grave conservative social thinking. With the passage of the health bill I am already seeing Facebook references to the defunct USSR which is the original red thinking. We are a rather oddly voting state in that we tend to vote for Republican presidential candidates while frequently electing… Continue

You Called Me Racist

I am a white woman. I was raised in a middle-class household in Pennsylvania, in a town where we still have mostly white residents. My father picked this town as our home primarily because of its racial make-up. He and my mother were raised in Pittsburgh, and had both been the targets of racial attacks by blacks during their time in the city. My father never gave the details of what happened to him, and only said that he'd been beaten in school by black boys. My mother told the story of how she… Continue

List of Women Blogging Politics makes The Huffington Post

I was pleasantly surprised today, to find that my political blog "Informed Voters" was receiving incoming links from The Huffington Post. It seems Carol Jenkins wrote a post about women in politics, and my list of over 275 women political bloggers got a nod. As happy as I am about being recognized by The Huffington Post, the overall message of Carol's post is an extremely important one...
"Don't let your voice be silent. Let's change the conversation together."
The Women's Media Center has created Progressive Women's Voices, a new program to change the conversation and ensure that all of our voices are heard. Through this program, the Women's Media Center will train, brief and support 15 progressive women whose stories and expertise are critically missing from the national debate.
