DEAR SEN. MCCAIN: OH YES SHE DOES NEED TO PASS AN IQ TEST

This just in: McCain Camp's Pre-Debate Spin: Palin Doesn't Need to Pass an I.Q. Test. Here's how the article begins: Listening to surrogates and aides to John McCain on Thursday, one is left with the impression that thereContinue

"Individual Responsibility and Mutual Responsibility ..."

With Barack Obama's acceptance speech tonight, he did at least two things: 1. He gave the best speech of the Convention, something I thought would be impossible to do based on how truly excellent so many other speeches were; and, 2. Barack Obama won me over completely. I found myself wanting to be at Mile High Stadium. Me. A woman who hates crowds. Me. A woman who has stated multiple times that this man was not my first pick. Ah, hell

The Legacy He Deserves

There is a scene in the movie Amazing Grace in which William Wilberforce tries to put forth his bill for the abolition of the slave trade in the House of Commons (yet again) and dramatically rolls out a petition signed by English subjects - over 300,000 of them. In the heat of debate, however, Wilberforce makes the mistake of referring to "the will of the people." Post American Revolution, and during a time when just across the channel a bloody Fre… Continue

The Right Woman for the Job

Just minutes ago, Senator Clinton gave a speech endorsing Senator Obama to be the next president of these United States. In the afterglow of her grace and graciousness, it occurs to me that I have yet to publicly express congratulations to Senator Obama and I do so now, without reservation. Senator Clinton's speech was not simply an endorsement of Obama, however. It was yet another glimpse of one of her strengths: leading by example. I am grateful for her example.
Her moving spee

The Pledge of Allegiance Revisited

When I got back from vacation, I saw this article about 3 students suspended for refusing to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance in their classroom. The students are 8th graders in Minnesota. This case presents us with a prime example of what "freedom" is NOT. Last week, I posted a piece about the importance of dissent and how a democracy's health… Continue

The Sign of Strength

A true sign that a democracy is robust and a society is thriving is whether and to what extent dissent is fostered, welcomed and heard. Be aware, however, that I'm not talking about the kind of contrarian hogwash that passes for "dissent" or "bold positions" nowadays. Contrarianism for the sake of it has taken hold (think Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter) because there's money to be made from fueling people's hate and fear. That's nothing new. What is new, though, is the extent to which we have for… Continue

You Do the (Paranoid) Math

(originally posted at Vim and Vinegar) I cannot seem to shake the notion that an incompetent, ragged-around-the-edges (which is not the same as "rough around the edges," which I can handle) puppet of a man was foisted on an unsuspecting, unsuspicious, American public almost 8 years ago. I now hope (and "suspect") that many voters are at least more cautious, if not suspicious, at this po… Continue

Did the Earth Move Under My Feet ... Just a Little?

This morning, on the front page of the Sports section of my local paper, readers were treated to photographs of Danica Patrick (congratulations, Danica, on making racing history!), Serena Williams (congratulations, Serena, on your Family Circle Cup win!) and Lorena Ochoa (congratulations, Lorena, on being the… Continue
