More on Palin and Special Needs...

A few days ago, I posted on my blog, New Wave Grrrl, about the gaps surrounding Sarah Palin's purported policy priority of addressing the needs of children with disabilities. I questioned the McCain-Palin ticket's ability to put our money where their mouths have been on the subject of more funding for people with special needs. On October 24th, Palin gave a speech in my home state of Pennsylvania, on just what she and John McCain planned to do in or… Continue

Straight Talk on the 2008 Presidential Candidates and Disability Issues...

Many people, like myself, feel that the way in which a society supports its most vulnerable or disenfranchised citizens is a critical indicator of how healthy that society is, and where it is headed in the future. The issue of disability policy and the improvements that are necessary to elevate the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities in this country has rarely made it into the mainstream discourse during this election. Unfortunately, this is not surprising as individuals w… Continue

Join the Right Here, Right Now Campaign and Give Women's History a Home in D.C.!

Despite women’s enormous presence and accomplishments throughout U.S. history in public and political life, we still are not represented in our nation’s capital with a monument or museum venue that truly captures the spirit and narratives of American women. Do you find this as unacceptable as I do? Well, thankfully the National Women’s History Museum (NWHM) seeks to change this and put women’s history on the map, the walking map of Washington D.C. that is, with their Right Here, Right Now Campai… Continue

Women's eNews published a story today written by Carol Roye, WeNews Commentator, Nurse Practitioner, and Professor of Nursing at Hunter College's Bellevue School. This is a MUST READ for anyone who cares about women's reproductive health and rights. Roye's piece, entitled "Global Gag Rule Must Not Be Domesticated," warns of the dangers of the United States bringing its own Gag Rule policy, which it has exported to developing nations that receive U.S. Aid for the better part of the past 2… Continue

Just When You Thought It Was Over...

When I saw the excitement unfold over the upcoming 2008 Presidential Election in various states and venues during the past several months, I could not help but think that maybe some of the detrimental public and reproductive health policies that have continued to plague the US over the past several decades, especially those that have been exacerbated by the Bush Administration, might be repealed and discarded. I thought that maybe US policymakers could finally get an opportunity to make a true a… Continue

Abstinence Only Until Marriage "Education" Programs: It's Only Teenage Wasteland...

Last week, on Wednesday April 23rd, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing on Abstinence Only Until Marriage (AOUM) curriculum programs. Tesimony was heard from both AOUM advocates and advocates of Comprehensive Sexuality Education programs, which include information on abstinence, family planning, contraception and condom usage. AOUM programs are still widely used in public middle and high schools across the US, despite the evidence-based conclusions and concensus… Continue
