Governor Sarah Palin—Bold Example, Like it or Not

I’m a firm beliver that we as women can “have it all”—just not at the same time. I’ve said it often to women I know. But now I’m wondering if the emergence of Governor Sarah Palin onto the national scene has debunked that theory.

Whether you like her or not, Governor Sarah Palin is a bold example of one woman who has shown courage and fortitude. She is one woman—unlike most—who thought she could hold elected office, maintain her marriage and raise her growing family at the same time. Remarkably, she has managed to do just that.

I’ve heard the reports of Governor Palin—back at work three days after delivering her fifth baby, or campaigning door-to-door with her young children in tow. This may seem inappropriate to some, but it definitely shows her determination and commitment to her role as public servant.

I know Sarah Palin is not the first political mom in the spotlight. Hillary Clinton has also inspired millions as a mom and First Lady. But Hillary Clinton wasn't the one in the Governor's seat in Arkansas (or the Oval Office in D.C.). Hillary waited until after Chelsea was an adult to run for elected office.

As a mother of four young children, I know that the emotional, financial and logistical challenges of managing multiple personalities, sibling conflict, meal preparation, homework, scheduling, and travel are huge. So, how Governor Palin manages her life is beyond me.

Though I might not agree with Governor Sarah Palin on all of her policy positions, I will admit that she’s caused me to re-evaluate my position on what I believe I can and cannot accomplish—and when. I believe in giving credit where credit is due, and we’ve got to give Palin credit for boldly entering a male-dominated world and even going against her own Party to do it. She’s kept her family together—and while they’re not perfect—they’ve persevered.

Politics aside, I believe Governor Sarah Palin can inspire each of us as women to boldly follow our own dreams—whatever they may be—and break our own barriers if necessary, to lead the life we were destined to live.

While I can’t say that I necessarily want to see her as Vice President…or President anytime soon, I can say, that I’m grateful to her for the bold example she has set for women everywhere—and I’m grateful to Senator John McCain for introducing us to her.

Anita, I agree with you partially. On the other hand, many of us are living examples, as I am sure you are one. I am not trying to say that governor Sarah Palin isn't an accomplished woman, she has done so much for herself. But so have a lot of women out there, who work all day and raise kids and take good care of their families and many without the help of babysitters or housekeepers, as I am sure the governor has had for many years. It did scare me when she spoke about war and for that reason alone I can't consider her an example for myself or any other woman for that matter. I think it is a pity that we have a woman like her running for the VP.
